Olga returned from
Perth
with three gold medals in her bag. Back in Zurich, she is doing her workouts and working as a coach with the Limmat-Nixen (Limmat Mermaids). Olga who has still the Russian citizenship would like to become Swiss.
No other swimmer can combine grace and power to such perfection as Olga Gold medal in the single, duet and team events: Olga Sedakova (26 years) swept all the top awards possible for a synchronized swimmer. Perth was the most successful competition after eleven titles as a European Champion. "Now", the blonde girl says, "this is my era". Of course she was at the top five for many years. But as with figure skating, to become a worldchampion, you not only have to display a top performance but also your face has to be familiar among the members of the jury. Only in summer 1997, when Olga won the World-Cup in China, she has been recognized by the members of the jury for her grace and perfect performances. In Zurich the Moscow born girl was always the big star In 1993, with the help of the Limmat-Nixen headcoach Susanne Morger, Olga arrived in Zurich with her friend Anna Kozlowa who later went to California. For many years she prepared for her success, but the very final trainings and preparation, Olga had to return to Russia in October 1997. Otherwise she could not have participated in the Russian team. In Russia it is regarded as a sensation that Olga has a Swiss coach and kives in Zurich. The simplest way to become Swiss is marriage - at least for such a wonderful and good-looking girl as Olga. But Olga smiles: "Just to get Swiss citizenship I don't marry. But who knows if I meet the right man." In the beginning, when she was new in Zurich, it was a difficult time: Language problems, everything seemed new and unfamiliar. Today, her german is almost perfect. Of course, the dedicated Olga learnt it on her own - at school everything was so slow... As a coach with the Limmat-Nixen you cannot get rich The salary is enogh for living. The Russian federation hesitates to pay the granted premium. She is very famous in Russia as well being invited to festivities and introduced to politicians etc. But she cannot buy anything with honors. In her home country sports clubs and federations lack money. Not surprisingly Olga does not enviy tennis and track and field stars who are not as successful as she is but earn much more. "Synchronized Swimming is my real passion and I do not to have to sacrifice my feminine appearance for the sport." With the help of Susanne Morger Olga hopes to find a sponsorship. When she was a girl, she had to suffer a lot in Russia. Very primitive living and training conditions, very hard and demanding workouts. But it was worth the effort, the three gold medals more than compensate for all the burdens and pain. She wishes to transfer her experience and capabilities to the young swimmers in Zurich. "There are many very talented girls in Zurich - but talent is not enough, in addition, you need mental strength. Unfortunately, the school system in Switzerland hinders many gifted boys and girls to combine education and sport in a balanced way. Thus, many young swimmers quit their sport too early. |
